In our mid-month mailer, we wish to remind emerging African researchers of the opportunity made available by Meta to apply for travel bursaries to the AfricAI Conference being held in Kigali in June. If you are working on AI ethics/human rights and policy/governance in African research then click here for details on how to apply. The African Observatory will also be looking to support the publication of awardees' work and provide ongoing mentorship to all awardees so please do apply :)
This week the African Observatory Research Directory spotlights gender research undertaken by Ladysmith, a feminist research consultancy, as part of the AI4D GEI Support Team’s learning brief series. Find the links to their fascinating learning briefs below.
Finally, on the social calendar, don’t forget about our session at Mozfest happening next Monday, 20 March 2023. The team has organised a fantastic panel with valuable insight into AI policy and practice in Africa!

AI4D GEI Support Team Learning Brief Directory
The AI4D GEI Support Team has produced a series of important learning briefs focused on different aspects of gender:
- Learning Brief No 1: Top 10 GEI priorities: is a checklist that summarises priority actions for integrating gender equality and inclusion (GEI) considerations in the early stages of grant selection and engagement.
- Learning Brief No. 2: What is gender-responsive AI, and why does it matter: provides an operational definition of gender-responsive projects in the context of AI-driven research and innovation. It also synthesises available research that illustrates why GEI considerations matter for the design and use of algorithmic decision-making.
- Learning Brief No. 3: Key action areas for more gender-responsive AI: outlines key action areas for advancing more gender-responsive AI, in order to ensure conversations around GEI move from the theoretical to operational.
